چکیده

There appear to be two versions of the Dual Bin Packing problem in the literature. In addition, one of the versions has a counterpart in the cutting stock literature, known as the Skiving Stock Problem. This paper outlines branch-andprice algorithms for both. We introduce combinatorial upper bounds and well-performing heuristics from the literature in the branch-and-price framework. Extensive computational tests indicate that the branch-and-price approach is superior to the existing branch-and-bound procedures, based on combinatorial bounds. The tests illustrate the influence of different problem characteristics on the computation time and the limits of the branch-and-price approach. 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Extending Two-Dimensional Bin Packing Problem: Consideration of Priority for Items

In this paper a two-dimensional non-oriented guillotine bin packing problem is studied when items have different priorities. Our objective is to maximize the total profit which is total revenues minus costs of used bins and wasted area. A genetic algorithm is developed to solve this problem where a new coding scheme is introduced. To evaluate the performance of the proposed GA, first an upper b...

An experimental comparison of some heuristics for cardinality constrained bin packing problem

Background: Bin packing is an NP hard optimization problem of packing items of given sizes into minimum number of capacity limited bins. Besides the basic problem, numerous other variants of bin packing exist. The cardinality constrained bin packing adds an additional constraint that the number of items in a bin must not exceed a given limit Nmax. Objectives: Goal of the paper is to present a p...

A Comparative Study of Exact Algorithms for the Two Dimensional Strip Packing Problem

In this paper we consider a two dimensional strip packing problem. The problem consists of packing a set of rectangular items in one strip of width W and infinite height. They must be packed without overlapping, parallel to the edge of the strip and we assume that the items are oriented, i.e. they cannot be rotated. To solve this problem, we use three exact methods: a branch and bound method, a...

Online Bin Packing with Cardinality Constraints

We consider a one dimensional storage system where each container can store a bounded amount of capacity as well as a bounded number of items k ≥ 2. This defines the (standard) bin packing problem with cardinality constraints which is an important version of bin packing, introduced by Krause, Shen and Schwetman already in 1975. Following previous work on the unbounded space online problem, we e...

The Maximum Resource Bin Packing Problem

Usually, for bin packing problems, we try to minimize the number of bins used or in the case of the dual bin packing problem, maximize the number or total size of accepted items. This paper presents results for the opposite problems, where we would like to maximize the number of bins used or minimize the number or total size of accepted items. We consider off-line and on-line variants of the pr...
